SOLIDARNOST među izbeglima i radnicima,                                                                    Stop nacionalizmu!

6th of october 2014
Today at 12 o’clock there was a rally under the title “Stop asylum“ held in Maldenovac that was organized by the “democratic party“ and the neo facist group “D(Z)veri“. If we can believe the media concerning the number of participants, over 1000 people joined the protest against a center for asylum seekers in Mala Vrbica. This is not the first gathering like this in Mladenovac, the villagers already showed in other occasions in the last years dissatisfaction with the decision of the government. So it remains unclear why the political authorities insist on opening the new center on that place, regarding the fact that other municipalities like Pančevo, agreed on having a new camp opened there. Also the center in Obrenovac (old hotel that was used as a camp for asylum seekers but was damaged in the floods in febuary 2014) should be reopened soon, to there is even more confusion -what is actually happening?

It is to notice that in the title of the FB page “Mala vrbica veliki problem” (= “small Vrbica big problem)“ (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mala-Vrbica-Veliki-Problem/160201104136577 ) they are mentioning an “open center“. Knowing the migration politics of the EU with its practice of locking up refugees, that is by the way also being implemented in Serbia as part of the european integration, it remains suspicious who stands behind this protest.Would the construction of prisons/detention centers for refugees according to EU standard be tolerated?

A gathering of about 1000 people is unthinkable when it comes to protests concerning topics like free education, the rising prices, the reduction of already beggarly pensions and salaries, GMO or the BusPlus system (comercialized and expensive public transport ticketsystem).
The organizers eben printed shirts with the sign „Stop asylum“, a car convoy of 50 vehicles was organized for the protest march and nacional serbian flags were presented as indispensable elements such racist events.

As top of the unification of citizens, representatives of the surrounding villages showed also their support of the Mladenovacians “struggle“. “ We know you are not fighting only for your city but for al of us in Šumadija (name of the region)“ – said the member of the D(Z)veri movement Vladan Glišić.

The atmosphere recalls the blocade in Obrenovac last winter, when a assembled male crowd ,fueled with home made Rakija/brandy, was ready to defend their homeland from unwelcomed foreigners (asylum seekers) at any cost.
Sad!

This protest is one more example of how a general hopelessness of society, a miserable situation in the country and of course a lack of information and education strenthens xenophobic, racist and nacionalist powers. We are all exasperated, dissappointed, but the anger canalizes totally in the wrong direction.
“Dear friends from the governmnent, get out of your cabinets and go to the factory “Petar Drapšin“ were the workers have not been payed for two years. Aks the farmers how they feel if for a sack of plums they can buy a package of cigarettes.“

Exactly! Of course our solidarity must be with the workers, but we have to ask, what do the not-payed salaries, the tycoons and the destroyed economy have to do with refugees???
What makes us- as young people- sad and angry the most are statements like:
“We don’t want our city to be a center for asylum seekers because of the future of our children.“
Did these same parents care or got organized for free education, against the catastrophic education system, against oligarhs, unemployment, exploitation, … only to name a few examples?Aren’t these things that threaten the future of the children?
Do not be fooled!
SOLIDARITY between refugees/migrants and workers!
Stop nationalism!
Freedom of movement and stay and the right to decent work for everyone!
